Recently, many of the scientists who have been busy inventing artificial intelligence decided to pause long enough to warn us that what they are working on might lead to human extinction. Meanwhile, screenwriters, who have been warning us of just that possibility for decades, are now on strike in part because AI might lead to the extinction of their jobs. (I’m a WGA member, but I don’t make my living as a screenwriter.)
Producers, on the other hand, are very excited about the possibility of using AI to create scripts, not only because it would eliminate the need to pay pesky humans, but also because the technology holds the promise of solving their own persistent, existential dilemma: they run a multi-billion-dollar entertainment industry yet cannot standardize their product because they cannot clearly explain what it is they are producing.
